I got this red currant pie recipe from a friend in Germany. It's a delicious way to incorporate red currants into your baking.

This pork roast and sauerkraut dish is what my mostly German-Irish family ate on New Year's every year of my life. It consisted of pork roast, sauerkraut, and kielbasa, and we enjoyed it with mashed potatoes. We ate pork because pigs are a symbol of progress. We ate sauerkraut, as it's believed it will bring blessings and wealth for the new year.

These fried potato dumplings, called Schupfnudeln in German, are irresistible. The potatoes should be cooked the day before so the dumplings are easier to shape. Serve as a side as you would any other potato.

These German almond meringue cookies are dairy free and gluten free and are baked during Advent in preparation for Christmas. They are delicious, quick, and easy to make with only four ingredients. Try one to make sure it is baked all the way through, as it can be hard to tell. In Germany, they are baked on backoblaten, little round wafers (there are gluten-free ones), but you can bake them directly on parchment paper as well. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
